Welcome to the KO-K-YO Foundation

The Afar people of Ethiopia have been deeply involved with the science of human origins as fossil hunters and protectors. They have made some of the most important fossil discoveries that have illuminated the hidden story of our origins. Despite the crucial role they play, they are unrecognized for their contributions. They live a semi-nomadic lifestyle, dependent on their livestock. However, with climate change, their lives are changing - the droughts they experience are longer and more frequent - necessitating a change in their lifestyle. Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie has worked with the Afar people of Waki and Waytalayta Villages for almost two decades and has a relationship built on trust with these villagers who are critical for his work and discoveries. The villagers of Waki adn Waytalayta know that their current of way of life has to change for their children to have a future. Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie co-founded Ko-K-Yo Foundation to provide educational opportunities for the women and children of this region. Ko-K-Yo Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization with the US Internal Revenue Service.

Our Mission: to address childhood literacy and women's empowerment in the Afar region of Ethiopia by providing educational opportunities for the women and children of this region

In the Afar language, Ko-K-Yo means "you and me", together, we can make a difference.
