A First Step
One of the primary goals of Ko-K-Yo is to provide literacy to the children of Waki and Waytaleyta Villages. While the school we intend to build is being planned, we want to provide hope for the students that they will get the learning space they deserve and promote learning immediately.
is this a school?
This was the “school” building in December of 2018. There were no desks or chairs in these dirt floor classrooms. Outside, the building was crumbling. It was literally non-functional as sessions were never held inside. The conditions were so bad that the students have to sit outside and use the shade of the “school” building in order to learn.
what DID we do?
As a small first step in our efforts, we wanted to fix the existing building so that the children can have a clean and comfortable space where they can concentrate on learning. We also wanted to provide the students with the most important classroom supplies - desks and chairs - so that they get a real feeling of a school and enhance their interests to learn.
In December of 2018, we held a fundraiser and raised enough funds to renovate the school and put in desks and chairs. The children are so proud of their school now that everyone is eager to go to school to learn, so much so that attendance at the school has tripled!
The children of Waki and Waytaleyta thank you for your generosity and making it possible for them to learn at a real school!
We have now reached our first milestone with the school renovation. But there is much more to do. Many of the children have to walk up to 7 miles to get to the school…that is 14 miles roundtrip everyday! Their dedication to their education is inspiring and we need to do more to make sure that they are able to learn. Please join us in helping the children of Waki and Waytaleyta achieve their dreams.
